Guide Of The Institute For French Studies 2007/2008

ORGANISATION OF THE STUDIES

The studies in the Institute for French Studies are divided into two stages.

The first stage covers the first three years of studies. It is a propedeutic, introductory stage, dominated by obligatory and oriented courses, independently of the specialization chosen by the students.

The third year of the studies will end with an examination for the degree of Bachelor (since 2009/2010). The examination for the degree of Bachelor will cover a major part, or at least a vast, easily distinguished problem of one of the main disciplines offered during the first stages: linguistics, literature and literary critics, culture and methodology of teaching.

In the academic years 2007/08 and 2008/09, the third year of studies may be closed with an examination for the degree of Bachelor, non obligatory.

A student desiring to get a Bachelor's degree has to submit an application, approved by the promotor of the thesis, to the Director for students' affairs, before the 30th of October.

The student gains the degree of Bachelor if he satisfies to the following conditions:

- participation to a proseminar (during two terms),

- obtaining a validation of the Ist stage of studies, i.e. collecting all the credits and passing all the examinations required,

- submission of a thesis,

- passing the examination for the degree.

The second stage of the studies covers the last two years. This is a stage of specialization, ending with the writing and submission of a M.A. thesis. The number of obligatory and oriented courses (PO) is reduced, whereas the number of specialized courses increases.

In order to obtain a M.A. degree, the student must satisfy the following conditions:

1. obtaining the validation of the whole studies, i.e. collecting all the credits and passing all the examinations required, submission of a completed M.A. thesis, getting the required number of points:

a) for students following the programme valid since the academic year 2004/2005, a minimum of:

150 points in the IFS system,
or 300 points ECTS (European Credit Transfer System);

b) for students currently of the IVth and Vth year (following the so-called "old" programme) , a minimum of: 106 points in the IFS system,

or 300 points ECTS (European Credit Transfer System);

c) validation of 4 terms of sport (credits are not given for sport);

2. passing the M.A. examination.

On the M.A. diploma shall figure a final note, calculated as follows:

a) the average of the notes got for examinations and in classes - 0,7 of the total,

b) the note for the M.A. thesis - 0,2 of the total,

c) the note for the M.A. examination - 0,1 of the total.

The Institute of French studies offers the following M.A. specializations:

- French literature (Department of French Literature),

- literature of French-speaking countries (Department of French Literature),

- French culture (Department of French Literature),

- linguistics (Department of French Linguistics, Department of Methodology of French Teaching),

- methodology of French teaching (Department of Methodology of French Teaching),

- sociolinguistics (Department of French Linguistics).

The IFS also proposes two other types of studies:

1) part-time studies ("evening studies")

a) of three years - Ist stage (to start since 2007/2008),

b) in M.A. - five years.

The part-time studies are submitted to a fee. The programme is exactly the same as that of full-time studies.

2) extramural studies of 2,5 years.

These studies are submitted to a fee. The programme is different (see: extramural studies).

Regulations for the school practice

1. Organisation of the school practice

The school practice includes:

The student may proceed to observations in more than one school and by more than one teacher, but the practical part, i.e. the lessons which he or she gives, must all be given in one school and under the supervision of one teacher.

 When beginning his or her practice, the student must submit to the receiving teacher all the documents related to the payment of the costs by the Institute of French Studies (the contract, the bill and the insurance formular). They are to be given, duly filled, to the tutor of the school practice in the IFS as soon as possible.

 2. Place of the school practice

The student may propose to pass his / her practice in a chosen school (a grammar school [gimnazjum] or  a high school [liceum]), if he / she has first obtained the consent of the French teacher and of the headmaster.

Otherwise the student is directed by the tutor of school practice to any school from those which collaborate with the IFS.

 The student may pass his / her practice in the proximity of his place of residence, and not in Warsaw (e.g. in Spetember). He / she has then to submit in the IFS, beside the evaluation of the practice, an opinion given by the local teacher.

3. Time of the school practice

It is recommended to have one's school practice during the spring term of the IIIth or IVth year.

Students may give lessons only if they have obtained the credit for two terms of methodology of teaching, and passed the examination in this subject.
