DESCRIPTIVE GRAMMAR - PHONETICS

Lecture: The sounds of the language will be described, form the material (articulation, basic acoustic parameters, perception) and the functional point of view (phonology). The students will also be given an overview of structural, generative and other, up-to-date approaches in some of their aspects, as well as the problem of pronunciation norm variance during the last fifty years.

Classes: They will provide a description of the rules of French pronunciation (vocalic system, vocalic harmonization, liaisons); students will also transcribe texts into the Internmational Phonetic alphabet (API).

Credit: assiduity, tests before each class.

Examination: written test (1st part: theory as given in the lacture, 2nd part - phonetic  transcription) in the spring session.
