NON-EUROPEAN FRENCH-WRITTEN LITERATURES: POSTCOLONIALISM, TRANS-CULTURE, "MÉTISSAGE"

This monographic course aims to give an overview of attempts to classify the non-European French-written literatures (Quebec, the French Antilles, Haiti and partly the Maghreb and sub-saharean Africa) and to present a series of problems related to the literary and aesthetic practice as used by the writers of those regions: the enunciatory situation of the French-speaking writer in the colonial and post-colonial times, the manifests and various programmes, the alienation and the standing apart, the "quest" of identity and identitary "métissage", the imaginary world of the French language, the relationship to the space and the times, the effort of the memory and "the effort of grief", the literature of the migrating, the hybridation of representation, the polyphony (heterophony) and polysemy, all shown on a selection of representative texts.
Credit: assiduity, test on selected problems
The bibliography shall be given during the first classes.
